Private medical colleges to fill vacant seats individually-

Seats vacant after the second round of admission in the state's private medical and dental colleges will be filled individually by the institutes for the second year in running. The Bombay high court has given an interim order staying the implementation of a government resolution (GR) of July 4 that directed private colleges to surrender vacant seats after the second round to the state. The round will be over this week.

The move would have brought about 5% of private seats under government control. As per the GR, admissions to the unfilled seats were to be done on the basis of scores obtained in the NEET—the centrally conducted entrance test for medical admissions in 2013-14. The Association of Managements of Unaided and Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMDC) moved court against the GR.

The high court observed that the GR would have barred students who appeared for the ASSO-CET—conducted by the AMUPMDC—from being eligible for the vacant seats. "This would be incongruous to the whole scheme," the court said. The matter will be disposed off on October 7.

AMUPMDC chairman Kamal Kishore Kadam said, "A student who has appeared for ASSO-CET with an intention to join our member colleges should be given preference. The government cannot give admissions in our colleges on the basis of a central entrance test."

In January, admissions for the 2012-13 academic year to nearly 250 seats were cancelled after a monitoring body found irregularities in admissions to 17 colleges.
